Model Answer:
In today's society, it has become increasingly common for parents to exert pressure on their children to excel academically and in extracurricular activities. This essay will explore the reasons behind this phenomenon and discuss that it is a negative development for children.
Parents often feel compelled to push their children to excel due to various factors. Firstly, there is a prevailing belief that academic success is crucial for future opportunities and a successful career. In an increasingly competitive world, parents may believe that placing high expectations on their children will increase their chances of success and secure a prosperous future. Additionally, parents may be influenced by societal expectations and norms that value academic achievements and accolades.
Furthermore, parents may see extracurricular activities as an avenue for well-rounded development and enhanced opportunities. They believe that engaging in a variety of activities can broaden their children's skill set, build character, and provide a competitive edge. Parents may encourage their children to participate in sports, arts, or other activities in the hope that they will acquire valuable life skills and increase their chances of admission to prestigious universities or securing scholarships.
While parental pressure can be driven by good intentions, it can have significant negative effects on children. Excessive parental pressure can have detrimental effects on children's well-being and development. When children constantly face high expectations and unrealistic demands, it can lead to immense stress, anxiety, and a loss of intrinsic motivation. They may experience a decline in self-esteem and develop a fear of failure. For instance, consider a scenario where a young student is constantly pressured by his parents to achieve top grades in every subject. Despite working tirelessly to meet their expectations, he or she starts feeling overwhelmed and anxious. The fear of disappointing his parents and the constant pressure to perform perfectly rob him of the joy of learning and exploring new subjects.
In conclusion, the phenomenon of parents putting pressure on their children to excel in school and extracurricular activities arises from a desire for their success and future prospects. However, while moderate parental involvement can have positive effects on children's motivation and discipline, excessive pressure can result in negative consequences for their well-being and overall development.
