IELTS Writing Task 2/ IELTS Essay:

You should spend about40minutes on this task.

In Britain, when someone gets old they often go to live in a home with other old people where there are nurses to look after them. Sometimes the government has to pay for this care.

Who do you think should pay for this care, the government or the family?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer:
As a part of the population in a country grows older, the issue of who should take care of the old population has been up for debate. Some believe that the family should take care of the old people while others believe that the government should take responsibility for their old citizens. I believe that the government and the family both have equal responsibility towards the aged population and instead of looking at the moral issues; we need to focus on what is better for them.

There are many families who are willing but are unable to look after their old parents and relatives due to certain factors such as poor financial situation. On the other hand, we have some families who capable but are just unwilling to look after their old ones due to various reason such as ideological differences etc. In both of those cases, I think it's better for the government to take the responsibility and look after the aged family members since the whole issue is how can we make sure those individuals live their remaining life comfortably. Forcing the families that just can't or aren't willing to look after their old members will only make the situation worse for the people we're trying to help.

On the other hand, we have lots of families which are both capable and are more than happy to look after their loved ones once they grow older. Well in those cases, the solution is quite clear and there seems to be no reason for the government to interfere.

All in all, I think that the issue of who should look after the old population depends on those factors listed above and our policy must act in the interest of the old population so that they can enjoy their rest of the remaining years of their life.

In recent years, old people who live in nursing homes has been increasing in Britain and all over the world. Unfortunately, people often debate on who should support them - the government or the family. Personally, I believe that affluent family members should be responsible for the cost while the government should take the obligation on behalf of the poor family. Firstly, parents play a major role in our childhood. They look after us, ensure better education, sacrifice their passion for our happiness and provide all facilities to us when we require. In addition, we inherit properties from them. So in a sense, we have the sole responsibility to look after them the way they did in our childhood. No parents should be unfortunate enough to be cast away to a home for old. In case a senior citizen who does not have anyone to look after him or her, the rich relatives should bear the cost. On the other hand, people who are forced to live in a nursing home are mostly tax players who have contributed to the welfare of the country the whole life. So in their old age, the country has a responsibility to pay it back. Taking care of the old people is a social responsibility of a government and they need to look after those who do not have rich children or are unable to pay for the service. In conclusion, it is such a delicate issue and both the rich family members and the government need to take responsibility to support the old people in a nursing home. After all, they are the people who built the country and we are reaping the fruits of their hard work.
