IELTS Letter Writing / GT Writing Task 1:
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
As part of a student social survey project, you are organising a group to visit a historical exhibition in a small town. Write a letter asking for information regarding such things as the contents of the exhibition, and the dates of its opening and closing, and if there are any discounts available.
Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Model Answer 1:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am an A-level student from R.V. College of Arts, Bangalore. As part of the student social survey project, we are planning to visit the historical exhibition that you are arranging in your town. I am writing to you to seek more details about the exhibition.
I understand this is a historical exhibition, but please elucidate on its content, such as, whether this exhibition focuses on any particular period of history, and what the highlights of the exhibition are. Please also inform me how students can benefit from visiting it. Could you also apprise me of the exhibition dates and timings? Finally, inform me if it will be closed on weekends or not.
As I mentioned, I am planning this tour for a group of students, so would it be possible for us to get any discount on group booking or perhaps for students? If so, please notify me of the discount we are eligible for.
I would be highly obliged if you could provide these details at your earliest so that I can start making the transport and accommodation arrangements.
Thank you in advance. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Prashant Kaur
Model Answer 2:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am administering a group of pupils to visit the historical exhibition in Shaftesbury, UK next month. This tour will be a part of our school activities to encourage young students to participate in social surveys and grow their interest in history. I would really appreciate it if you could forward me some information regarding the exhibition.
First of all, when the exhibition will be held and what are the daily opening hours? Secondly, is the exhibition suitable for the fourth and fifth graders? Please notify me about the theme and exhibited objects on display. This would help me better explain to my students the content during our trip. Finally, what are the other activities being held in connection with the exhibition?
I am planning to bring over twenty students to the exhibition. So I would like to inquire whether we are eligible for any discount on entrance tickets. If there is no general discount, could you please arrange one for students?
Thank you in advance. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Sarah Johnson
Model Answer 3:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am about to organise a small group of students to visit the historical exhibition in your town in an effort to encourage them to participate in different kinds of social survey projects and learn new things. So, I would request some information to finalise the arrangement.
Needless to say, this kind of participation would help these young students to understand the types of problems and the prospect of a society in which they live. But, before visiting that historical exhibition, I could surely use some information from your part. For example, information, like what kinds of contents or items would be displayed at the exhibition, and what historical period or era those historical items belong to, would be highly appreciated. Besides, I would also love to get some specific information about the dates of its opening and closing along with its hours of operation. Finally, I could also use some information on whether there is any discount available for a group of 16.
So, I would be highly obliged if you could please provide me with these details at your earliest convenience so that I am able to start making the transport and accommodation arrangements in advance.
Yours faithfully,
James Collin
